Jargon Explained

Sin (verb)

To do or say something that it is reasonable that somebody else considers it offensive, in particular God. In other words to treat somebody in a way that you would not like to be treated yourself.

Sin (noun)

The spiritual disease within our hearts that lies beneath our character weaknesses that cause us to act selfishly and offend others.

Temptation

The urge to sin. It puts us under pressure to do something that will satisfy a selfish fear or desire instead of being full of loving generosity, joy and peace.

Lusts Of The Flesh

Selfish lusts and fears that cause problems in our relationships. They can develop into; sleeping around, sexual perversion, occult activities, domination, hatred, aggression, strife, indulgence, addictions, paranoia, greed, envy, deceit, arrogance, hypocrisy etc.

Bondage

That which makes you unable to resist the temptation to sin and indulge lusts of the flesh. Those deep-seated fears that cause unreasonable behaviour and attitudes. They can be overcome in the name of Jesus. They include depression, insecurity, confusion, deception and being unable to acknowledge particular facts (denial).

Curse

That which enables evil to be brought upon us. It can be inherited or brought about by our own deeds. There is power to overcome and break them in the name of Jesus.

Deliverance

To be set free from bondage's and curse.

Blessing

Unmerited good available to all through Jesus Christ.

Salvation

Safety or protection from the effects of sin, bondage, curse and judgement.

Saved

To be rescued or made safe. Often used to refer to someone who has trusted in the Gospel. It can have a more specific meaning concerning release from the power of sin, or from the day of judgement when God will deal with all the evil in the world and judge the words and behaviour of everyone.

Gospel

Literally it means Good News. The Good News is that through the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross and through His resurrection from the dead we can have all our sins forgiven and be set free from all our negative character problems and weaknesses. This sets us free to give lovingly instead of being fearful and demanding.

Confession

To admit that you have sinned to God. Very effective when said out loud even when you are alone with God in prayer.

Repentance

To turn your heart so that, through God's help, you will stop sinning and learn to live with a loving attitude to those around you.

Justified

Having responded to the gospel and been forgiven, cleansed and transformed by the life of Christ that is now flowing from you, you have now become a "just" person before God.

Righteous

It has the same meaning as justified. To be "right" with God. To be friends with God.

Sanctify

To surrender yourself to God so that, by the strength that comes from the Holy Spirit who is in those who have trusted in Jesus, your behaviour and attitudes are reformed.

Baptism In The Spirit

The experience of receiving God's Holy Spirit into your heart. You are free to receive Him after you have confessed and repented of your sins and given yourself to God. You give yourself to God and God gives Himself to you.

Born Again

When you receive the Holy Spirit you have become a new person and you start a new life, set free from the old you.

Church

A word used to refer to various Christian organisations and also the buildings they use. It has a significantly deeper meaning in the scriptures, where all those who have received the Holy Spirit are called the Church.

Fellowship

Often used to describe an organised group of Christians, but its basic meaning is to have a very close friendship with someone.
