Some people like help from someone who is already a disciple of Jesus Christ when they give themselves to God. However if you are alone you could also use the following prayer examples as a basis for your personnel prayer response to God. There is nothing special about these prayers. Jesus will be delighted if you use your own words. After reading the following prayers, if you would like God to know that you really mean them we suggest you repeat them, speaking them out firmly. If you have not already made the lists we have suggested it will be helpful if you have a pen and paper ready to make them now.
A new or struggling believer may also find themselves drawn closer to God by reaffirming their decision to follow Jesus by following this prayer strategy.
Creator God I want to thank you that Jesus Christ, through His death and resurrection, opened up the way for me to be reconciled to You. I am sorry that I have had many attitudes and done many things that are offensive to you. I come to You now to repent and to make You my Lord and my Saviour. Amen.
I declare that I wish to forgive all those who have ever hurt, abused, offended or let me down. I ask you to bring to my mind all those who I need to forgive. Amen.
Now make your “Forgiveness List”. It may include; parents, partners, children, family, friends, teachers, employers, colleagues, companies, national and local government organisations (NHS, Police), thieves, abusers, attackers. If you remember someone later just immediately forgive them. Note that forgiveness is a decision and not a feeling. If you do not feel it, decide to do it anyway. By doing this you are not letting them get away with it. God will be dealing directly with them over it. Also include anyone that you have sinned with.
Father God I declare that I forgive all these people and organisations (Present to God those on your list ... ) and I ask You Lord God to forgive me for being bitter and resentful towards them. Where this needs to be worked out more deeply in my attitudes I ask you to wash me clean of these bad attitudes as I yield myself to You. Amen.
Oh Lord God I come to You now to confess, renounce and repent of all of my sinful attitudes and behaviour. I ask you to bring to my mind all those things I need to repent of. Amen.
Now write a list of specific deeds and a list of specific attitudes that you know will have offended God. You may find it helpful to review the description of what sin is on our "Sin" page.
Lord God I come to You now to admit, renounce and repent for all my sinful deeds and attitudes:
I repent of hiding from You and not loving You.
I repent of living for other things other than You.
I repent of all the ungodly things that I have said.
I repent of any anger, bitterness and resentment towards all those who have offended me.
I repent of all the lies I have told.
I repent of taking things that I had no right to.
I repent of all ungodly sexual activity.
I repent off all my pride and vanity.
I repent of: (Present to God the specific attitudes and deeds on your list ... )
Oh Lord I confess and renounce all these sins and turn from them and ask you to forgive me for them all. Please come and wash my heart clean of my sin nature and put Your Holy Spirit within. {Do not be alarmed if you start talking in an unknown language. God wants you to have this way of praying to Him.} I come now to accept You as my Lord and my Saviour. I give myself and my future to You so that I may follow Your will for my life. I will obey your instruction to be baptised in water as soon as I can. In the name of Jesus I break any ungodly emotional bonding to those who have hurt me or I have sinned with. I ask for all these things in the name of Jesus. Amen.
