The Earth Divided
The next notable event recorded in the Bible is the earth being divided.
And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan. [Gen 10:25]
To clarify what this obscure event was, we have to go to the book of Jubilees again. About 100 years after the Flood Noah apportions what lands his sons and their offspring were to occupy. In doing so the earth was divided. No earthquakes were involved. Following that event some of Noah’s offspring may have obeyed God’s command to fill the earth and had moved away from the Ararat area but it appears as though the majority remained close by.
Then the time came when the Ararat based majority also wanted to go exploring but as we shall see later they wanted [or were forced] to remain together.
And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. [Gen 11:1-2]
Biblical Shinar is better known today as Sumer and is located in Mesopotamia in southern Iraq.
Modern writing with its well developed alphabets enables us to very accurately write something down. Ancient writing was less developed. It did not record the vowels in words or indicate when a word started or finished. This meant to read a text, vowels and the spaces between words had to be inserted by the reader from their pre-existing understanding. Most of the time they are actually fairly obvious. But if you were not familiar with a text, it was possible to put the wrong vowels in when reading it. This would be especially easy to do when reading names in a language you were less familiar with. It seems the ancients were not too worried about getting other peoples names correct anyway, even abusive puns were used. This explains why [Hebrew] SHINAR = [Sumerian] SUMER.
The Sumerian culture is the oldest known civilisation known to archaeologists. Their writings say that they migrated there from Aratta. It has been suggested [Legend – Rohl p71] that [Sumerian] ARATTA = [Hebrew] ARARAT.
The Assyrians later called the same area Urartu. It is not too hard to see that [Assyrian] URARTU = [Hebrew] ARARAT. For someone new to seeing how names are linked across ancient languages this may all seem really dubious but it is a well established practice.
Modern historians credit the Sumerians with many significant inventions and cultural structures. Yet all they were actually doing was just carrying on the practices that had been developed during the (appropriately) 2250 years between the Creation and the Flood. Historians are also puzzled why Sumerian and Egyptian cultures suddenly appeared fully developed from stone age hunter gatherers. Main stream historians would be confused because those cultures did not arise out of hunter gatherers. They were just repeating what was done before the Flood.
The Bible also refers to Sumer as Chaldea.
Thou art Yehovah the God, who didst choose Abram, and brought him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gave him the name of Abraham; [Neh 9:7]
The sorcery of Sumer became so great that later during the Babylonian Empire a master sorcerer was called a Chaldean.
Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof. [Dan 4:7]
